My Baba, My Personal Hero
“Forgive me for any hurt I may have caused you” — these were the last words my father ever spoke to me. There was nothing unusual about it; this was how we always parted ways when months separated our next meeting. I responded with the same words, “Forgive me for any mistakes I have made.” But then he said something that deeply upset me, in a voice lower than usual: “I may not see you again.” I immediately lost my composure and replied, “Oh come on, don’t be so dramatic! I’ll be back in two months to see you.” Without waiting for a response, I walked out to the parking lot, headed for my ride to Dhaka airport. It was February 14, 2024. My father passed away on February 27, 2024, after being unconscious since February 21, following a brief episode of aches and pains we didn’t take seriously.
I’ve replayed the events of that day, and the next 13 days, in my mind countless times. I can recount them minute by minute, hour by hour: every diagnostic test, every conversation with family, doctors, and friends, the alert hours during flights back and forth, every agonizing breath I took. But this story is not about that. This is a celebration of my father, Muhammad Alfaz Uddin—a man both remarkably ordinary and extraordinarily exceptional at the same time.

‘টেপরি রানী বর্মন: এক মহীয়সী নারীর বিদায়’ এমনি কিংবা কাছাকাছি শিরোনামের একটি লেখা গেল ১৫ই মে বাংলাদেশের বিভিন্ন অনলাইন সংবাদমাধ্যমে চোখে পড়ল। ১৯৭১ সালে তরুণী বধূ এই নারী বিয়ের মাত্র আট দিন পর নিরাপত্তার কথা ভেবে ফিরে এসেছিলেন বাবার বাড়ী। সেই তার দাম্পত্য জীবনের সমাপ্তি।

"নারীদের খুব সহজেই চরিত্রহীন বলে বিভূষিত করা যায়। 'বার-বিলাসিনী', 'বারনারী', 'বারবণিতা', 'গণিকা', 'বারাঙ্গনা' শব্দগুলো খুব সহজেই বলা যায়। (জীবনের শেষ বেলায় জিজ্ঞেস করছি-) সে কি আমাকে না পাওয়ার বহিঃপ্রকাশ?"

সংবিধান বিষয়ে অভিমত
আজ পুরো দেশ সংবিধান নিয়ে সচেতন হতে চেষ্টা করছে। স্বাধীনতা-পরবর্তী নিরঙ্কুশ মতামতের ভিত্তিতে তৈরি এই রাষ্ট্রনীতি নিয়ে সৃষ্টি হয়েছে দ্বিমুখী ভাব—মুক্তির আবেগ মাখানো সংশ্লিষ্টতা এবং রাজনৈতিক ব্যর্থতার দায়ভাগ। দেশি-বিদেশি নানা মুনি নানা মতের পসরা সাজিয়ে বসেছেন। পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খভাবে প্রতিটি অনুচ্ছেদ, ধারা, উপধারা যাচাই-বাছাই করার সদিচ্ছা ও সুযোগে অনেকেই মগ্ন হয়েছেন। বাংলাদেশের এবং দেশের বাইরে প্রান্তিক জনগোষ্ঠী নিয়ে আমার দীর্ঘদিনের কাজের সুবাদে আইনেরকথার পক্ষ থেকে আমি কয়েকটি বিষয়ে নিজস্ব মতামত প্রেরণে এই লেখার অবতারণা।

As I See Things Around Me: A Book That Can Inform and Delight Readers
Looking at Bangladesh since the summer of 2024, the violence and disrespect spilling over to teachers at all levels, from primary to university, one cannot help but notice the complete breakdown of trust and hierarchy between these two groups. Along with the lack of genuine education on the part of the students, perhaps the teachers themselves are to share the burden of this shameful demonstration of blasphemous attitude towards them. .
